History of Badrinath Temple

The history of Badrinath Mandir is quite fascinating. The temple’s exact origin is difficult to determine, but it is believed that the great saint and philosopher Shri Adi Shankaracharya discovered a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in the Alaknanda River. He decided to install it in a sacred cave.

Initially, the deity was worshipped in a simple form, which later developed into a temple. Over the centuries, its significance has evolved, making it one of the most revered Hindu religious destinations in Uttarakhand.

There is no exact record of the date of Badrinath Temple’s construction. However, its history is traced back thousands of years. Numerous legends are associated with the temple. The Badrinath Temple finds mention in Vedic scriptures, and it is believed that it was once considered a Buddhist Vihara until the 8th century when Adi Shankaracharya revived it.

Legends of Nar and Narayan

There are many fascinating legends associated with Badrinath Mandir. According to one legend, during Lord Vishnu’s intense meditation, he was unaware of the harsh weather conditions. To protect him from the scorching rays of the sun, Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree and spread her branches over him to provide relief. Witnessing this act of love and devotion, Lord Vishnu was pleased and named the spot Badrikashram in her honor.

Another legend states that Nar and Narayan, the two sons of Dharma, sought to establish a hermitage for their spiritual pursuits in the mighty Himalayas. While searching for a suitable place, they came across the four sites of Panch Badri and the two cold and hot springs near the sacred Alaknanda River. They found these places so serene and beautiful that they named the region Badrivishal.

Yet another legend recounts that the Pandavas from the Mahabharata ascended to heaven via Swargarohini (ascent to heaven) and Mana Village, which is situated north of Badrinath.

The idol of Lord Vishnu within the temple is depicted in a calm and meditative posture. Additionally, the temple houses 15 other black stone idols of various gods and goddesses.
